So, you’ve downloaded our Digital Skills Assessment Tool? And now you’re wondering how best to use the Tool to ensure you get good, reliable results from everybody.
Here we share three tips for using the Tool quickly and easily.
Tip #1: Give people some dedicated time to complete it
Set aside a dedicated time to complete it. It’s the best way to ensure everybody completes it, and understand why they’re doing it. Do you have a regular team meeting? Then print out enough copies for everybody, and it’ll take only 5 minutes.
Tip #2: Give some context to downplay people’s fears
How would you feel if your boss dropped some kind of assessment in your in-tray with no explanation other than “fill this out”?
The alarm bells would start ringing! You’ll be taken back to the days of school exams, and your palms will start sweating.
Your brain will start whirring with questions. What’s going on? Are we being restructured? What have I done?
All this can be avoided with some context about the purpose of the assessment.
With the Digital Skills Assessment Tool, it’s as simple as explaining that you’ve got the opportunity for some free computing training to improve people’s productivity in the digital age. You want to give everyone the chance to figure out if they might need to be part of that training. Let them know it’s not a test and it doesn’t matter if they’re not confident with computers. You’re just here to help them get better if they need to and want to.
Tip #3: Offer to help people with the Assessment Tool
One in five adult New Zealanders struggle with basic reading. And they’re often very people who need help with digital technology.
We suggest offering some help to complete the assessment tool. It’s as simple as sitting beside them while they complete it, and answering any questions they have. After all, it’s designed to give you an idea of their digital technology skills, not their literacy skills.
