Cameron Forbes has joined Adult Learning Support as our new manager. He brings managerial and teaching skills from working in industry and more recently, running a busy English language school in Auckland.
Janet began her career as an Occupational Therapist working with mental health & brain injured patients. Later she moved to ACC and was Principal Case Manager in Nelson for seven years. She has served on professional advisory boards and was president of the National Association of Occupational Therapists. In the course of her professional work she developed quality plans, policies & procedures and ethics codes for the industry.
In 1990 she trained as a volunteer literacy tutor with Adult Learning Support and her passion for this work has lead her to diversify her career into this field. Janet is a senior tutor at Adult learning Support charged with the Supervision of newly trained tutors. She delivers several contracted programmes for ALS including workplace development, apprenticeship support and community education programmes.
She achieved her CALT certification in 2009 and has since enjoyed working with and learning from a number of adult students. Her background was in nursing for over 25yrs. This included general, psychiatric and public health nursing all while raising three children. Over the past few years she has become increasingly interested in specific learning disorders like dyslexia, and now works in a local primary school assisting children to achieve specific learning goals on a one to one basis. She is also trained in the delivery of a reading programme called MULTILIT (Making up lost time in literacy), and use a number of computer based programmes including Lexia.
Judy has been a literacy tutor for Adult Learning Support since 2005. She has a health professional background having been a Registered Nurse in the UK for 10 years and then retraining as an osteopath. She has run her own osteopathic practice (in partnership) for the last 20 years. Currently, she is supporting students who have these goals in their sights: passing the NZ Police Entrance Tests, ACE level 2 course for Home Support Workers, National Cert. in Civil Infrastructure, accurate completion of reporting paperwork in the Retirement Home setting.
Gerry is a highly qualified and expereinced tutor with a B.Ed Hons., M.Ed., Cert TEFL, and CALT. He has spent 21 years teaching High/Elementary school, 2 years TESOL teaching at NMIT, Workplace English at Sanford, 1+ year as literacy/numeracy tutor, mainly to apprentices.
