Join our team: New Manager needed |
| We will shortly have an opening for a talented, multi-skilled person to lead our not -for-profit organisation. Adult Learning Support is a leading supplier of adult literacy, language and numeracy tuition in the Nelson and Motueka area. ALS provides professional services both to community and commercial businesses. After a period of rapid growth we need a manager who will consolidate our existing programmes and identify growth opportunities.

Marian our Manager is leaving |
| We are sorry to announce Marian Richards, the manager of Adult Learning Support for the last 7 years is stepping down to pursue further study and change the pace of life. She has been a dynamic and visionary leader and has helped ALS grow from a small, mainly voluntary, organisation to one of the major providers of literacy services in the region.

International Literacy Day |
| We had a big celebration on International Literacy Day (Tuesday the 8th of September) at Fairfield house. Much fun and many laughs were had playing the "hearts" game run by one of our tutors. Awards were also presented to all our learners to honour their progress and improvements in various aspects.

Books for Blokes: Record Entries |
| We have received record entries for our Books for Blokes competition, over 100 were accepted by the time we closed the competition on the 31st of July. There are some wonderful stories and we have more than enough to make another great book. We now need to make a short list and decide which ones to include in the book. We hope to be able to do that by the 18th of September. All authors will be notified by that time.

Computer based learning meets Rere Atu foundation learning. We are starting the new semester with an exciting new style of service. By merging the strengths of the computer based learning programmes with the personal touch of small group and 1:1 we are going to be able to offer a highly individualised programme of literacy and numeracy.

Books for Blokes: Short Story Competition |
| Adult Learning Support is delighted to announce a new short story competition. Our first competition resulted in the highly successful "Caught in the Act". We are launching this new competition to specifically target young men.
We are looking for great stories for men who are reluctant readers. We know that the Nelson region and New Zealand at large has many magnificent storytellers. We want to capture their stories in an anthology suitable for young men who are improving their reading.
1st prize = $300 2nd prize = $200 3rd prize = $100
Stories must be:
- Original and not published elsewhere
- Of interest to young men
- Min 300 – Max 1500 words
- Received by 31st July 2009
- Written using relatively simple language & structure.

We are now comfortably in place at our new premises, 43 Montgomery Square above Bin Inn. Although the unboxing will carry on for a few weeks, we are up and running and delighted to have a more spacious, professional looking, lighter and quieter environment to work in.
