The course was a resounding success, with all the students reporting that the most important thing they got from it was the friendships they had struck up. Six weeks passed far too quickly and the most common conversation on the last day was "I'm not happy about this you know" followed by "What are we going to do now?" followed by "can we start it again?" Thankfully Jeanie, our onsite tutor, has agreed to host the group once a week until Christmas.
There were some delightful moments and a lot of fun along the way - staff holding babies for hours on end and everyone pitching in so that the magic could happen in the tutoring room. Activities like knitting, to which the initial reaction was negative, turning out to be one of the most popular past-times. One of them, who couldn't cut an onion, broke her family’s daily takeaway routine to cook her first meal for them. Others watched their babies learn to crawl or gained ten fold in confidence.
For Adult Learning Support it was a large endeavor, everyone stepped up as needed and now that the course is over there is a lot of space in our offices and in our timetable. An empty nest if you will; a timely reminder of the enormity of the undertaking that is being a parent.
Congratulations to the students, Cole, Rania, Lose, Jessica and Hollie on their success and thanks to Diane and everyone at ALS for enabling it to happen.
