1 in 5 people in New Zealand have difficulty with literacy or numeracy.

Adult Learning Support works with people to enable them to take opportunities, make choices and fully participate in their communities. We are a member of Literacy Aotearoa one of New Zealand's largest literacy organisations.

Our programmes are a mixture of one to one, small group and computer based tuition:

  • Basic skills like reading, writing and spelling
  • Workplace literacy for safety, quality and work related qualifications
  • Study skills help with further education and apprenticeships
  • Basic maths and computing
  • Life skills such as preparation for work, driver's licences and completing forms

Join our team: New Manager needed

We will shortly have an opening for a talented, multi-skilled person to lead our not -for-profit organisation. Adult Learning Support is a leading supplier of adult literacy, language and numeracy tuition in the Nelson and Motueka area. ALS provides professional services both to community and commercial businesses. After a period of rapid growth we need a manager who will consolidate our existing programmes and identify growth opportunities.

International Literacy Day

Adult Learners WeekWe had a big celebration on International Literacy Day (Tuesday the 8th of September) at Fairfield house. Much fun and many laughs were had playing the "hearts" game run by one of our tutors. Awards were also presented to all our learners to honour their progress and improvements in various aspects.

Marian our Manager is leaving

We are sorry to announce Marian Richards, the manager of Adult Learning Support for the last 7 years is stepping down to pursue further study and change the pace of life. She has been a dynamic and visionary leader and has helped ALS grow from a small, mainly voluntary, organisation to one of the major providers of literacy services in the region.

Blended Learning

Computer based learning meets Rere Atu foundation learning.  We are starting the new semester with an exciting new style of service. By merging the strengths of the computer based learning programmes with the personal touch of small group and 1:1 we are going to be able to offer a highly individualised programme of literacy and numeracy.
